Sophomore Workshop: Strategies for Architectural Design

This course seeks to familiarize students with architectural principles at the scales of the public square, building, and city. Through iterations of model-making, drawing, photography, and other representational methods, students explore creative design processes and develop a personal voice for their work. Special attention is given to principles of contemporary urbanism, relating architecture to landscape architecture, planning, and urban design. Through a series of hands-on assignments, we emphasize craft, verbal presentation, curation, and relationships between design work and readings.

Sites for design interventions include Savannah, Georgia; Chicago, Illinois; and Chandigarh, India. These cities represent grid planning across the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, spanning colonialism, industrialization, and modernist planning.
