The Fallen Comrade Table is a black, granite table with empty place settings, each inscribed with a fallen Marine’s name. The Table is the centerpiece of a 1/24 Marine Battalion Memorial precinct composed of a path, seating, commemorative plaques, a wall, and a Fallen Soldier Battle Cross. Nicholas Watkins, PhD, and Anna Ives, AIA, designed the memorial with the Marines and Ben Tiseo, AIA, of Tiseo Architects.
Watkins is a 2007 Ph.D. graduate of the School of Architecture’s Social and Cultural Factors in Design program. Watkins’s dissertation research of the psychological impact of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC, on Vietnam War Veterans’ PTSD symptoms informed design and experiential elements for the 1/24 Battalion Memorial. The adoption of these design and experiential elements including the empty place settings, a wall evocative of Iraqi family courtyards, and circular circulation around the site directly engage the Marines, their family members, community members, and other visitors in ritualistic acts of interpretation and mourning.
