David M. Chasco Invited to Lead 2019 Volterra International Design Workshop
Professor Chasco led a team of Illinois School of Architecture graduate students in the International Design Workshop sponsored by the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Architecture and hosted by the Volterra-Detroit Foundation’s Volterra International Residential College.
The workshop was held August 1-11. Participating university teams typically include students from the University of Detroit-Mercy, Warsaw Technological University, and the University of Pisa. Professor Chasco presented the lectures “A Retrospective Design Career in Practice and the Academy” and “Evolving Philosophy of Design.” Four teams of students designed urban and architectural responses for “Bastion: Proposals for New Uses at the Porta Fiorentina.” The students’ design efforts were exhibited and presented to various Volterra townspeople and stakeholders. Professor Chasco has been invited by the University of Detroit-Mercy to participate in the Volterra 2020 Summer International Design Workshop.
In addition, Professor Chasco was invited to serve as a member of the Volterra-Detroit Foundation beginning in 2020. Professor Chasco participated in the workshop in 2015, 2016, and 2019. The first workshop was held in the summer of 2015 with James Timberlake of Kiernan Timberlake as the workshop moderator. In 2016, Professor Chasco recruited alumnus David Miller, FAIA to serve as the workshop moderator. Professor Chasco served as the workshop moderator in 2019. The Volterra-Detroit Foundation, besides hosting the University of Detroit-Mercy’s School of Architecture summer program, has also hosted the University of Utah’s College of Architecture and Planning Fall Semester Program and other university programs nationally and abroad.
